A lot of people in network marketing are desperate to start making money in their MLM business.  Many are sold a bill of goods when they’re recruited about how “the products will sell themselves” and that network marketing is an easy way to make money, especially when you build your business through the use of the internet.

Well, here’s a wake-up call — there is no easy money and you KNOW that.

Don’t get me wrong, network marketing is a great way to leverage your time and effort to build a solid business that earns a lot of money for you and everyone on your team, but it doesn’t just magically happen.  You’re going to have to do some work to make your dream a reality, just like any other home business.

And that’s where a lot of network marketers go off the rails.

Things don’t happen as quickly as they would like and they start getting desperate to start bringing some money into their business.  After about the first month, when the sales aren’t happening and they’ve tried to recruit everyone they know, newer network marketers get into a panic and make fatal mistake number one.

Fatal Mistake #1:  Looking For A Magic Bullet

I guess it’s human nature to believe that if you could just find that one tool or special system you could sponsor hundreds of people into your business and sell thousands of dollars worth of product.

The truth is that there are some really great marketing strategies, tactics, and tools that will help you in your business — but there is no “magic bullet.”

If you want to learn to prospect online, then you need to learn some basic internet marketing skills.

Once you learn the skills, then you need to actually apply them to your business, measure the results, and tweak your strategies when necessary.

The problem with looking for a “magic bullet” is that a lot of newer network marketers will jump from strategy to strategy, spending a ton of money along the way, looking for  a way to make quick, easy money.  Few, if any, stick with a strategy long enough to see the results.

The only people getting rich from “magic bullets” are the people selling them.

Fatal Mistake #2:  OVER Promoting Affiliate Products

Spend a little time in online network marketing circles you’ll immediately figure out that the majority of people aren’t trying to get people involved in their network marketing business, they’re trying to sell them affiliate products.

What’s even worse is that those same network marketers will recommend product “A” today, product “B” tomorrow, and product “C” next week — and all three products to the exact same thing!

Let me clarify something here — There’s nothing wrong with occasionally mentioning an affiliate product or even promoting a product that you’ve used and found very useful to other network marketers.  That’s one of the benefits of connecting with others in your industry.

What I’m talking about here are network marketers who are desperately trying to supplement their income by bombarding others with affiliate offers.  When you see any network marketer doing this, it tells you three things:

  1. They aren’t doing nearly as well in network marketing as they would like you to believe.
  2. They really have no idea how to effectively market their products or opportunity online.
  3. They are only after your money and will probably treat you the same way if you allow them to sponsor you.

How could you ever trust the advice of an upline who conducted business like this?

Personally, I couldn’t.

Fatal Mistake #3:  Lack of Focus on Core Business

Many of the network marketers that we talked about above who were over promoting affiliate products spend a lot of time, energy, money, and effort promoting those affiliate programs.

That’s energy that they aren’t putting into their network marketing business and they probably aren’t earning too many affiliate commissions either — especially since everyone seems to be promoting the same affiliate programs.

If your core business is a network marketing business, you should be spending the majority of your time promoting your products and your opportunity.  If you’re running your network marketing business properly, then you’ve always got prospects to talk to in every step of your marketing process — even if you do a lot of it on autopilot.

It takes time and focus to build a solid network marketing business.  But you’re watering down your efforts when you spend too much time marketing affiliate programs.

Focus on your core business and you’ll have a lot more success.
