69 Super Solid Link Building Strategies

Link building is one of the most important aspects of search engine optimization that you can undertake for your website.  The number and quality of inbound links to your website (your link profile) accounts for 7 out of 10 of the most important factors in determining your search engine rankings according to a report published by SEOmoz.

Here are the top 10 factors with the ones related to links highlighted:

  1. Keyword Use in Title Tag
  2. Anchor Text of Inbound Links
  3. Global Link Popularity of Site
  4. Age of Site
  5. Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
  6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site
  7. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community
  8. Keyword Use in Body Text
  9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site
  10. Topical Relationship of Linking Page

Clearly, link building is hugely important and it’s something that we all need to pay attention to.  That’s why I wanted to tell you about an article written by Wiep Knol over at Wiep.net.  He has compiled a list of  69 link building strategies for 2009 that’s very inclusive and provides a lot of great link building tips.

Here’s how he breaks the list down:

  • 7 internal link building strategies
  • 10 beginner strategies
  • 12 places to submit your site to
  • 12 old school link building techniques
  • 12 ways to make people write about you
  • 12 common business tactics
  • 4 important considerations

Probably my most favorite part of this article is the end…  Advanced Linking Strategies.  It’s my favorite because there aren’t any listed!

“There is no such thing as advanced link building. While this list already sums up quite a few different strategies, I’m pretty sure that you can easily come up with a dozen more, that are specifically suitable for your company or industry.

Eric Ward once said that link building is “one part marketing, two parts public relations, and three parts common sense”. I’d say that link building is 10% basic SEO knowledge, 20% business thinking, 30% creativity and 40% perseverance. Either way, there’s nothing advanced to it.”

Is Santa a marketing guru or just a pawn?

Answers eMagazineThe December edition of Answers eMagazine arrives on virtual newstands today. This month’s cover story is, “Santa: Your Marketing Guru.” It’s a cute article written by a contributing author, but I’m not really digging the whole Santa-as-a-marketing-guru-thing.

I think Santa is really just a pawn in an evil plot designed by marketers all over the world to get our money.

Santa’s Rotten Kid Problem

How many parents go out and buy gifts in the name of “Santa” just so that their children will get exactly what they asked the fat guy for when they sat on his lap two weeks prior?

Especially parents who have rotten kids! You know… the one’s that deserve and get coal in their stockings.

Make More Money: 3 Overlooked Profit Opportunities on Your Site

If you’re already selling anything online, this article is going to show you how to add extra revenue you didn’t even know you had “hiding” in your site without getting any more visitors.

Overlooked Way #1 - An Upsell:

If you’ve been in marketing for any time, you’ve probably heard of “upsells” or “bumps.” Car dealers are excellent at using this technique. Once you have agreed to buy a car you then go into the finance office. This finance guy is really another place where they try to extract as much money as possible from you; dealer financing, extended warranties, rust coating, a low-jack security system, etc. These additions will normally add as much, or more, profit to the dealer as the original sale.

Where Harry Potter Really Messed Up

Harry Potter and the Half Blood PrinceI have to admit, I was really looking forward to Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince - due out in November 2008… That was until I heard the astounding news that the Warner Brothers Studio was pushing it back until July 2009.

I call this astounding news because the only reason that I’ve heard sited for bumping it back was so that the studio could make more money.

In other words, they made a killing on The Dark Knight and so they didn’t need a big blockbuster this fall to end out the year… so why not push it back so that they can seed their profits for next year? In addition, the kids are out of school and movies are more accessible to them, and they’ve also got the DVD/Christmas season release to consider.

HUGE mistake.

Let me tell you why I think the studio has really messed up on this one…

When A Guru Loses It… And Takes It Out On His List

I subscribe to a lot of lists in the online business and marketing world as well as competing newsletters in my various niches. I do it so that I can keep on top of what’s going on with my competition, the various industries I’m involved in, and the internet in general… and I suggest that you do it too because it can be very enlightening at times.

I had one of those enlightening moments this weekend where one of the self-proclaimed gurus of internet marketing completely lost it with his list, alienated his subscribers, and probably lost a lot of folks.

Let me set up the story for you and explain how he could have avoided the whole thing…

Why I’m NOT on the ‘Traffic Secrets’ Bandwagon

Traffic Secrets 2.0I can’t believe how many email messages that I’ve received regarding the new Traffic Secrets 2.0 course due out today at noon… it’s completely ridiculous!

But then again, that’s why John Reese makes so much money with his product launches.

I have gotten every kind of email you can image — everything from the “buy this from me and I’ll give you all these bonuses” to “I’m above all this, but buy it from me anyway” to the pre-written email messages in the affiliate area of the Traffic Secrets website.

Since Traffic Secrets is giving away 51% commission on the course (and there is a pretty heafty pricetag), it’s no wonder that so many affiliates are trying to cash in on a huge payday when it releases.  But I really wonder how many affiliates are going to make any sales… aside from the sale that the affiliate buys himself (or herself). Do your customers hit the back button right before they buy?

Back buttonI recently went to a small business membership website aimed at showing people how to maximize their online sales.  I’d heard that the site was really great and I planned to join… only I didn’t.

Three specific things turned me off about the monthly subscription and made me think that this membership website really wan’t all it was cracked up to be.

So… I hit the back button.

Are you making these three small business mistakes? Read more
