What’s With Dan Kennedy’s Blog?

February 28, 2008

Okay, I hate to criticize a marketing guru like Dan Kennedy… after all, he is touted as being THE MAN by tons of marketing types who really know their business… but what’s with his blog?

Take a look at it…  It must make him money or he wouldn’t continue to run it, but it’s really lacking in some key componenets:

1.  It’s really ugly.  With all the marketing money he has at his disposal, he should definitely take a look at hiring someone to fix it up and make it look more professional.  It screams amateur.

2.  It has way too many bookmarks.  At last count, he had 17 bookmark images showing for each blog post.  It kind of makes me think that he’s trying to be everything to everybody… a big no no in the marketing world.  He probably has some reason for putting up all those bookmarks, but I just don’t see it.

3.  His posts are completely un-engaging.  Okay, I don’t know if un-engaging is a word or not, but it should be in this case.  Writing compelling posts that draw in readers and facilitate lead generation is the name of the game in online business.  The posts on his blog read as completely monotone summaries… plus they give next to no information.  It’s obvious that there was no time or thought put into them.

4.  Terrible Headlines.  Nearly every post starts with “The Power of…”  If you’ve ever read any of Dan Kennedy’s copywriting materials, you know that headlines are crucial.  These headlines are definitely not getting it done.

5.  No comments allowed.  Why would you bother to write to and maintain a blog if you aren’t going to allow people to ask questions and make comments?  I guess he never heard of Web 2.0, huh?  Maybe he just wanted to avoid  getting all those spam comments or people who post ridiculous comments just so that they can get a linkback… I don’t know, but it seems silly to me.

My Conclusion

I don’t think that Dan Kennedy is actually posting to his own blog at all.  I think he must have someone on his staff do it for him.

Someone completely untrained and clueless.

I don’t really have a problem with that, but he should occasionally pop in and take a look at what’s being posted on a blog with his name on it… after all, he has a reputation to protect.

What do you think?  Am I on the mark or have I gone too far?
